Gifts I Received While Listening

“Life has no richer reward for any man than the reward that comes with the knowledge that another – a man, or a woman, or a child – has been given a little start toward health, happiness and success by just a little attention or encouragement on our part.” ~ J.C. Penney

So much to write, so little time. That is the story of the past few days. I met a friend whom I had not seen in fifteen years and thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing and catching up. We remembered how we applied to come to America, our trip through Paris, how we ended up in different states, how we went back and how we returned. We remembered how only 32 of us were selected out of the 1,300 who had applied. As special as this meeting was, an even more special event also took place this week.

I was given a chance to make a real and positive difference in someone’s life. I am very skeptical that there is anything more fulfilling in life than the sentence just mentioned. Also, I doubt that people get such an opportunity often and when given the chance actually act upon it. This week has been amazingly special as a result. A few people have had a major impact on my own life, especially at critical turning points. I can never forget these people. What I have done is nothing compared to what they have done for me. Furthermore, even though I hope I’ve made a difference, only the passage of time will confirm this. And although there may never even be a confirmation, I know that I have changed in the process of helping someone else. My point is that when we help others in a transformational way, we actually help ourselves mentally and spiritually. Until this week I completely underestimated this phenomenon.

One of my favorite and often remembered lessons from Physics is the law of conservation of energy. It basically states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy can only be changed from one form to another or transferred from one body to another, but the total amount of energy remains the same. This law rules everywhere but it does not apply to human energy. By our words, thoughts and actions, we can create enormous energy or destroy enormous energy in ourselves and in others. The past few days made this point crystal clear.

  1. what was the impact and who was the lucky person?
I am sure that the fulfillment worth your efforts.
Keep on the good work in that direction.

  2. I will never forget your patient listening to our African American neighbor in Ft. Myers. You would always tell me a percentage when I asked you how much you understood of the conversation due to your lack of english skills at the time. Fond memories!!
